Bright yellow flowers bloom mid-summer atop single stems with interesting gray-green foliage. Spreads by rhizomes to form colonies. The flowers provide nectar and pollen to a wide range of bees, flies and butterflies. Host plant for the silvery checkerspot butterfly. Birds, particularly goldfinches, feed on the seeds in the winter.
