Clusters of fuzzy purple blooms are especially attractive to butterflies. Plants generally grow taller in moist soils. Cut back in late spring to manage height. Spreads by rhizomes to form clumps and is not suited to small spaces. Blooms late summer through fall, providing an important nectar source for late-season pollinators. Host plant for several moths as well as the short-winged katydid (Conocephalus brevipennis) and Four-Spotted Tree Cricket (Oecanthus quadripunctatus). Birds eat the seeds. 1 gallon pot
