These early bloomers provide an abundance of purple flowers starting in late winter. Flowers are an important early forage for bees when not much else is blooming. Host plant for the Variegated Fritillary butterfly. Several gamebirds eat the seeds including Bobwhite Quail, Mourning Doves and Wild Turkeys. Plants will re-seed to make an evergreen groundcover that thrives in part shade and also takes full sun. The leaves and flowers are edible.
