Larval host for Wavy-Lined Emerald Moth (Synchlora aerata), Southern Emerald Moth (Synchlora frondaria), Common Eupithecia (Eupithecia miserulata) Silvery Checkerspot Butterfly (Chlosyne nycteis), Gorgone Checkerspot (Chlosyne gorgone) and Bordered Patch Butterfly (Chlosyne lacinia). Seeds are eaten by birds, particularly goldfinches. Depending on growing conditions, Rudbeckia hirta may act as an annual or short-live perennial.
