Clump-forming perennial grass with drooping seed heads that resemble oats. Foliage turns a beautiful yellow-gold in the fall. Can be used to prevent soil erosion along streams. Prefers part shade but can tolerate more sun as long as it gets enough water. Foliage may yellow in sunnier sites. Self-seeds vigorously. Deadhead the stems before seeds ripen or use in flower arrangements to prevent seed spread. Host plant for northern pearly-eye butterfly and several skipper butterflies. Seeds eaten by birds.
